PVC slip/repair couplings, what good are they?

On a vertical vent repair I find they work well. But on the horizontal drain/vent I see leaks occur. Case in point...if you prime them ahead of time, they will not slide on. But without priming they can leak. Sliding the coupling on only spreads the glue thinner, thus creating an area that can leak.

I find myself using no-hub bands or no-shear bands.

Unless the vent will pick up..I stick with the no-hub too.

I hope when you use the no-hub bands you use the no-hub PVC adapters. I had an inspector gig me on using no-hub bands on a PVC pipe with out the no-hub adapter fitting. He then said if I used a no-shear repair coupling he would of passed it.

out here we can transition up to 2.5'' without a specialty plastic rated band on sch 40 pipe. the no hub bands used for no-hub can transition to abs/pvc without the use of an adapter.

never have tried or found a pvc or abs slip coupling. even for irrigation, i don't use slips nor have i seen them in stock.

This is PVC to PVC, I dont think I had enough room for two adapters. No hub adapters are for transition from no hub to PVC...correct? Would'nt it be a waste of a band to use a no shear on a 3" pvc vent?

You would think so. But he wanted a PVC to no hub with the no hub coupling then a no hub adapter to PVC. I had to squeeze in 4 of these adapters to cut in a vent for a shower that a home owner didn't properly vent, and the slip couplings leaked for me .

I would have used no-hubs here, but if you use slip couplings you just prime everything and then glue the hell out of it all...that is what allows u to slide it all together. You might need an extra set of hands to get in done before it sets up though.

When I tried to prime one, it stuck on the pipe. An extra set of hands would help. But you are still pushing the glue...thus the leaks.

Back to back adapters? Would that retard water flow? This pic looks more like a Soil adapter, but they are both similar.

Are you beveling the edges of the PVC? I haven't ever had a leak when I bevel, and every joint is beveled. These work from 1/2" to 4". Gets rid of the ridge from the cut and keeps more glue on the joint.

I only use slip couplings with repair jobs, and the best place to use them is with a SlipFix coupling. Cut out the broken piece of pipe, One end of the SlipFix gets glued to one end of the pipe, the other end of the pipe gets a slip x slip coupling glued in place, then the SlipFix telescopes into the slip coupling. Very cool fitting!

we use to use something very similar to that when we were doing 3 story abs jobs. they were required for expansion joints when we had 20'+ of vertical pipe on the waste or vent.

had about 4'' of play and we would preload them at 2''. this allowed for both expansion and building shrinkage.

the difference was these were approved for waste /dwv systems.

                        Three story ABS not allowed.

This thread has a serious case of A.D.D.
All your talking about is the illegal long couplings?
                          They don't have any taper.

The glue couplings with out a stop in them so you can slip them out of the way line up the pipes then slip back in place. Its the same size as a standard coupling.

You can get PVC couplings without any stop in the inside. Like a slip copper coupling.

Supposedly to use when your "locked in" but have the ability for lateral movement on at least one side of your connection.

Messier, and less likely to hold any test.
