Alkathene Pipe

What Is Alkathene Pipe?

Alkathene pipe is made from Medium Density Polyethylene (MDPE). The term alkathene was used extensively until the 1990s, but since then it has been sold as MDPE pipe. It is a widely used pipe material due to its flexibility, durability and chemical resistance. Typical applications include drinking water mains, gas mains, hydro power schemes and agriculture.

What Is Blue Water Pipe Made From?

Blue water pipe is made from Medium Density Polyethylene (MDPE). Previously, MDPE was known as alkathene. Blue MDPE water pipe has been WRAS approved for drinking water use in the UK.

Is There a Difference Between Blue and Black Alkathene Pipe?

The blue colour of alkathene (or MDPE) pipe denotes that it has been tested and approved by WRAS for potable (drinking) water use. Black alkathene should only be used for non-drinking water applications. Some manufacturers make a black pipe with blue lines, which is also WRAS approved.

What Sizes Is Alkathene Pipe Available In?

Since the 1990s, alkathene (MDPE) pipe has been available in metric sizes only. Prior to then, imperial sizes were also produced. Metric to imperial adaptor fittings are available. Metric sizes available are from 10mm to 1100mm outside diameter.

What Is the Blue Pipe That Brings Water to My House?

In the UK, the blue water pipe bringing water to your house/business is most likely MDPE or alkathene. In other countries, blue PVC is sometimes used.

How Do I Join Alkathene Pipe?

Alkathene pipe is joined using compression fittings. The pipe is cut square and a liner inserted into the end of each piece of pipe. A compression fitting is then tightened across the joint. Larger diameters (>90mm) of alkathene (MDPE) are joined by electrofusion or butt welding. Alkathene pipe cannot be glued or cemented together.

What Are the Advantages of Alkathene (MDPE) Pipe over PVC Pipe?

Alkathene (MDPE) pipe is very tough and flexible, and has the advantage of being resistant to fouling. It is not as quick and easy to install complex systems as it is with PVC pipe, but is excellent for long pipe runs which are buried or may be subject to impact.

Is Blue Alkathene Water Pipe UV Resistant?

Blue alkathene pipe (MDPE) is not UV resistant. It is designed for underground use, but can be used above ground where there is minimal exposure to sunlight. The rate at which the pipe will degrade in sunlight is dependent on the intensity and duration of exposure, but, in the worst places, the plastic may begin to become brittle after two to three years.
