Product description
Blast gates are used to open and close branch ducts to divert airflow only to those machines in operation. This conserves air volume and keeps suction strongest where dust is being produced, thus maximizing dust extraction. Outer case made from cast aluminum with sliding steel gate and locking knob. Typical gate allow debris to accumulate in the groove preventing the gate from closing fully, causing leaking and reducing suction. The slot on these units extends through the back of the base to allow debris to be pushed out of the groove and prevent buildup.

So far they are working fine. But here an advice. When you install them mount then on a way in which the guillotine opens by pulling it up or horizontal, never down. The reason is that if while closed you tight the small nut, the screw will push the plate creating a gap from with it will leak. If you do not tight it, the vacuum itself will pull the guillotine against the frame creating a good seal. See video attached

I would give this a five star if the manufacturer would make a few modifications to improve this blast gate. The current design does not allow gate to fully open. I modified mine by first making a 7/16" drill start and then grinding a groove with dremel tool to allow nub on gate to fully retract. I also added a piece of rubber insulation to close gap on opposite side of gate slider to seal and prevent whistling when blower is operating. Lastly, include directional arrow to indicate airflow when installing in ductwork.

SAVE YOURSELF SOME MONEY, buy the aluminum. I’ve had professional shops for decades. I’ve occasionally purchased the plastic blast gates , only to eventually replace them with the aluminum. No matter the manufacturer, the ABS ones are inherently inferior. Even brand new, the gates don’t open or close completely, and after using for a while, dust becomes trapped and compacted in the track, making them even more useless.
The old adage, “Save money, buy the most expensive tools you can afford”, applies here.

I replaced plastic gates with the aluminum ones. The plastic gates were clogging with sawdust and wouldn’t close all the way. The only issue is that these gates do allow for some vacuum leakage at the gate end. I taped a piece of plastic across the end to act as a vacuum stop. Better but not perfect. Typical Amazon order; product is as described and there was no problem with the order.

Unit is very sturdy, well built. Note that 4" flex hose fits over it fine, rigid pipe (crimped end) would need to be modified to fit (either in/out side), if you are wondering. I simply cut the pipe back a couple of inches to get rid of that, and slid the pipe over this.

Good fit on 4" hose with plenty of a lip for a hose clamp. Wrapped a few turns of hockey tape around the other end for a snug fit on PVC sewer/drain pipe. The set screw/ knob arrangement is smaller than it should be and seems like the weak link. I may drill it out and tap for a larger screw. Otherwise, does what it should.

I have previously purchased cheaper plastic gates. They clogged. These work exactly as I would expect them to. They do not seal 100%, but the do seal at least 95% and they do not clog.
