Working with PVC pipe in tight spaces and around plumbing structures can be difficult. If you just need to make a simple bend, you can do so without using elbows or fittings.
A hair dryer provides just enough heat to cause PVC pipe to bend, but it can easily cause the pipe to kink. The secret ingredient to prevent this kinking is to cover one end of the pipe with duct tape and then fill the pipe with sand up to the point you want to make your bend. The sand will prevent the pipe from kinking and create a nice smooth transition.
This video demonstrates how easy the process is, and even shows you how to make multiple bends in the same pipe. The pipe used in this example 3/4", so we'd be curious to see how well this trick works on 1-2" PVC pipe.
