For Fire Prevention Week 2019, NFPA has announced the theme “Not Every Hero Wears a Cape. Plan and Practice Your Escape!”, and we wanted to bring attention to escape plan best practices identified by NFPA below. Whether you live alone or with others, proper preparation and communication will reduce the risk of injury or death due to fire-related events. Lorraine Carli, Vice President of Outreach and Advocacy at NFPA said it best, “From young students who learn about the (Fire Prevention Week 2019) campaign at school to parents who attend a community event like a fire station open house – all of them truly are heroes because they’re taking steps to make their households (and communities) much, much safer from fire.”
Fire Prevention Week 2019 Heroes Should Remember:
Prepare:
- Know the top causes of a fire in your home.
- Be sure to equip your residences with smoke alarms and fire extinguishers.
Plan:
- Know at least two ways out of each room.
- Identify a meet-up location that’s a safe distance away from the structure.
Practice:
- Escape plans should be practiced at least twice a year.
- Make sure everyone participates.
NFPA has been the official sponsor of Fire Prevention Week since 1922 and provides resources to educate the public and keep you safe. President Calvin Coolidge, signed a proclamation that declared a national observance during Fire Prevention Week in 1925, to promote emergency preparedness and reaffirm our nation’s enduring commitment to fire safety.
