How to Connect a Shut off Valve to a PVC Pipe

A PVC pipe is a versatile plumbing material attach to other types of plumbing materials through various fittings. A good example is the metal shut-off valve of your toilet. Here are the materials along with the instructions on how to connect a shut off valve to a PVC pipe.

Step 1- Prepare the PVC Pipe

Prepare the PVC pipe by wiping the ends of the PVC from the inside and outside using a dry cloth. Make sure that the end of the PVC pipe is completely dry before proceeding to the next step.

Step 2-Apply PVC Cement

Apply PVC cement in the end of the PVC and the PVC adapter. Using a dabber that comes when you purchase PVC cement, apply adequate amount of the cement around the end of the PVC pipe. Apply PVC cement on the inside and slip onto the end of the PVC adapter.

Step 3-Install the PVC Pipe

Assemble the PVC pipe and the PVC adapter by inserting the end of the PVC adapter into the end of the PVC pipe. Push the PVC pipe into the adapter and spin the PVC pipe inside to mesh the PVC cement which bonds the adapter and the pipe together.

Step 4-Use Teflon Tape

Use three layers of Teflon tape on the other end of the PVC adapter. Apply the Teflon in the threaded inside of the adapter and smoothen the Teflon using your fingers.

Step 5-Install the Shut-off Valve

Attach the shut off valve into the threaded end of the PVC adapter by screwing the shut off valve in. Align the valve with the threads properly to avoid damaging your PVC adapter.

Step 6-Tighten the Valve

Using a crescent wrench, tighten the shut off valve into the PVC adapter. Make sure not to over tighten to avoid thread damage on your PVC adapter.
