Understanding Dresser Couplings

If you are looking to quickly and reliably connect two pipes in your system, the coupling may be your solution. Couplings are used to quickly connect two even pipes with a tight, durable seal and a flexible joint. The Dresser coupling consists of one cylindrical middle ring, two follower rings, two resilient gaskets made up of a special Dresser compound and a set of steel track head bolts. These couplings feature an epoxy coating which offers optimal protection against corrosive soil or aggressive water conditions. This product is made for handling brine, brackish water, most acids, alkalies, oil, chemical particulates and gases.

The Benefits of Dresser Couplings

Dresser couplings are fast and easy to install with any size pipe or tubing in a variety of materials. In order to virtually cover every application including high temperature and abrasion, Dresser carries sizes that can range from 3/8’’ to 405’’. Their temperature range suits environments from -20°F to +1200°F with pressure ratings up to 1500 psi. Dresser couplings are available in rugged welded steel construction, stainless steel, carbon steel, titanium, monel or other alloys for special applications depending on your needs. Additionally, special elastomer formulations can be provided to customers needing to follow a specific fluid process or application requirements.

The Dresser coupling, 10’’ ID and larger is built to accommodate up to 3/8’’ longitudinal pipe movement which is equivalent to the amount of movement resulting from a 120 degree temperature variation in a 40-foot length of steel pipe. Given that your pipe is not buried, there should be enough anchorage to prevent excessive accumulation of movement.

Dresser Compounded Rubber Gasket

Every superhero needs a sidekick and Dresser gaskets are just that. Without them, a flexible joint is not possible.  Pipe joints must be able to absorb pipe stress that may be caused by natural forces or natural expansion, contraction, vibration and deflection when your line is in service. The sealing capabilities and flexibility of a Dresser coupling is only made possible by its trusty sidekick, the resilient rubber-compounded gasket.

Dresser gaskets are found in two different grades – Grade 42 and Grade 27. Dresser’s Buna N, Grade 42 gaskets have a maximum temperature of 150°F. These gaskets are resistant to oil, most aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons, natural gas fogging oil, condensates and gasoline. The Buna S, Grade 27 gasket has a maximum temperature of 212°F. This gasket can take on a wide range of applications and is accepted as standard for most pipeline use. Applications can include lines transporting both fresh and salt water, natural and other gases, air, most acids, alkaline and sugar solutions and some refrigerants.
