A conveyor belt pulley is a mechanical component used in belt conveyor systems to drive the belt, maintain proper tension, change the direction of belt travel, guide the belt back to the drive pulley, and ensure accurate belt tracking.


Conveyor belt pulleys play a critical role in bulk material handling operations. The type of pulley selected and how it is configured directly affect the efficiency, performance, and reliability of the entire conveyor system. Proper pulley selection helps keep equipment operating smoothly and minimizes unplanned downtime. In contrast, selecting the wrong pulley can lead to belt misalignment, excessive wear, and system failure, resulting in costly operational disruptions.


A typical belt conveyor system consists of a flexible conveyor belt and at least two pulleys: a head or drive pulley and a tail or return pulley. Depending on the specific application, additional pulleys may be incorporated to support belt tracking, tension control, or load handling requirements.


Drive or Head Pulleys

Drive or head pulleys are installed at the discharge end of a conveyor system and are responsible for driving the conveyor belt. They are powered by a motor and gearbox, causing the belt to move and transport material. Head pulleys are typically mounted in external bearings and feature either a flat or crowned face. Many head pulleys are lagged to improve traction, reduce belt slippage, and enhance overall conveyor efficiency.

Idler Pulleys

Idler pulleys are any conveyor pulleys that are not used in a drive position. Instead of transmitting power, they rotate freely as the belt passes over them, providing support, guiding the belt, and maintaining proper alignment. Depending on their function and placement, idler pulleys can be categorized into several types.

Return or Tail Pulleys

Return or tail pulleys are installed at the loading end of the conveyor and are used to redirect the belt back toward the drive pulley. Similar to head pulleys, tail pulleys can be mounted in either external or internal bearings. In short conveyor systems, the tail pulley often doubles as the takeup pulley, helping maintain proper belt tension.

Snub Pulleys

Snub pulleys are positioned close to the drive pulley to increase the belt wrap angle around the drive pulley. By increasing the contact area between the belt and the drive pulley, snub pulleys improve traction and reduce the likelihood of belt slippage, especially in high-load or low-friction applications.


Bend Pulleys

Bend pulleys are conveyor pulleys used to change the running direction of the conveyor belt while also helping provide tension at points where the belt path changes. They are commonly installed to create a belt loop that allows the use of a take-up system. Bend pulleys get their name from the way the belt bends over the pulley to redirect its path and accommodate proper belt tensioning.

Take-up Pulleys

Take-up pulleys are weighted or adjustable conveyor pulleys designed to remove slack from the belt and maintain the required belt tension during operation. They are typically used on longer conveyor systems where belt stretch and load variations are more significant. The position of a take-up pulley can be adjusted to compensate for changes in belt length over time, ensuring consistent tension and reliable belt performance.
